Leonard Wood Institute Selects LSI to Develop 3D Data Conflation Tool

STERLING, VA, (November 1, 2007) – LSI, a small business committed to developing innovative spatial technologies and providing high quality digital mapping services, has been selected by the Leonard Wood Institute to create a conflation tool for volumetric 3D spatial data. LSI's project was selected through a competitive review process designed to fund research and development initiatives that will benefit the U.S. Army's mission at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

The project will be performed by a team of researchers and developers from LSI and 1Spatial, a U.K.-based company at the forefront of spatial data quality. The team has worked together since 2003 to design and implement systems for the automatic creation, validation, storage, maintenance, and exploitation of 3D topology for geospatial features. These cutting edge capabilities enable users to move beyond simple 3D data visualization to perform 3D data analysis. The conflation tool will strategically build on these capabilities to enable users to generate fit-for-purpose volumetric 3D data from multiple sources with varying data detail and quality.

Full exploitation of increasingly available 3D data to support military and homeland defense activities such as consequence management will require the ability to rapidly gather data of a varying quality and mix data of different providence in an efficient, error-free, and automated process. Analysis of the resulting data would:

  • Provide superior situational awareness;
  • Support near real-time decision making;
  • Enhance the speed and ability of movement in complex environments;
  • Reduce the cognitive demands of dealing with multiple datasets.

Mary Brauer-Cox, President, LSI, commented: "We're delighted to have been selected by the Leonard Wood Institute to support the Army. Our goal is to provide a significant new capability that effectively and efficiently creates useful volumetric 3D data from multiple sources. Accomplishing this through a standards-based component architecture is key to getting the capability quickly into the hands of military and homeland defense planners and analysts."

For over 15 years, LSI has specialized in providing GIS technology and expertise directly related to the production of high quality geospatial data. LSI's innovative services include spatial data production, data re-use and re-purposing, maintenance, software development, consultancy, enterprise-wide data assessment and quality control.

With geospatial production, research and business development activities focused on expanding its activities in areas that include development of true 3D data models and applications, geospatial data production services, cutting edge data cleaning and quality systems, LSI continues to provide a full range of spatial expertise to government and industry.
